Open Studio 003

Thursday 29 May 2008 / 12 noon - 5 pm
Horizon Scotland / Forres, Scotland
Free of charge, spaces limited (see below for booking information)

Interested in what's going on at Distance Lab? At our "Open Studio" events we show you how we're pushing the limits of technology and design to overcome the disadvantages of distance. We also expose you to some of the most innovative research ideas and personalities from other parts of the world.

This third Open Studio event follows a similar pattern to our earlier oversubscribed events. The day will include invited presentations by two cutting-edge investigators:

Machined Craft

Peter Schmitt is a PhD candidate in the Smart Cities group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab in the USA. His work focuses on pushing the limits of digital fabrication techniques for applications ranging from car design to artistic production. He will discuss how machines (such as CNC machines and 3D printers) can be a direct tool and augmentation of people's creativity, craftsmanship and artistic expression rather than simply a means to amplify production and quantities beyond human capacities, thereby eliminating the human from the equation. Peter’s interest in fabrication is based on his work at the Academy of Fine Arts, Duesseldorf, where he earned a Diploma in Fine Arts.

Haute Tech

Di Mainstone creates interactive couture garments that playfully explore human behaviour. She will be discussing her evolution from established London-based fashion designer to nomadic creator of "Haute Tech". More specifically she will be looking at a selection of her work in the field of interactive fashion including Company Keeper, Emotional Ties, Skorpions and ShareWear. She will also give an introduction to the upcoming TraveLight project to be completed at Distance Lab over the summer. Di will reflect upon the relevance of this kind of work in both the world of research and fashion as well as discuss her plans for the future. Di was trained in fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London, and has created work in the past for Topshop, Urban Outfitters, and Jimmy Choo.

A light lunch and presentations will be followed by open studio time during which you can visit our lab space, check out our equipment, talk to our researchers, and see our latest project demonstrations.

Outline agenda:

12:00 - Registration opens and light lunch available
13:00 - Presentations begin promptly
15:00 - Coffee break and open time in Distance Lab studio space
17:00 - End
